How to Create

Start by exploring outside at a local park, beach, or lake, and look for a smooth rock – one is fine, but collect more if you want!

When you and your rock(s) get back home, help your child prime it with white craft paint.

Let it dry, then help your child paint their rock a base color of their choice.

Decorate the rock, and give it a personality with eyes, hair, and accessories!

Parent Tips

  • Ask your child: How did you decide to decorate your rock? Did you give it a name?
    • If they’ve named it after a family member or a (human) friend, ask why.
    • If they’ve given it a brand-new name, ask how they came up with it.
  • If you found more than one good painting rock, decorate more to create a family or group of rock pals!
